My kiwiana clock

I designed and made a clock for my technology lesson. I used an old cd. The kiwiana icon I used  for my clock is the map of New Zealand. This was a criteria I had to use to make my clock. I found difficulty with sticking the numbers on the clock and I had to get help from my teacher. I was really happy with my finished product. The next time I make a clock I will use a different kiwiana icon like the silver fern.

Tooth Fairy comes to Room 24

My tooth was wiggly and I pulled it out. I put my tooth in a safe place in my classroom and went outside for morning tea. When I came back from morning tea I saw my tooth was gone and there was a fire engine key ring. I was surprised and happy that the tooth fairy came to my classroom and gave me a present. When I press the engine, a light comes on.

Fijian team first to arrive

I was very excited to go to the Auckland airport to welcome the Fijian rugby team. There were hundreds of supporters cheering for their favourite player. They took photos and waved the Fijian flag. New Zealand welcomed the team by performing the kapa haka. The players autographed T-shirts, rugby balls and flags. Look at the picture of my flag. I feel very proud of the Fijian team. My homework is to find information about my favourite player.

ALL BLACKS FLAG

I made an ALL BLACKS flag for my technology lesson on Kiwiana. I used black fabric and stitched pieces of foam for the silver fern design. I made the flag because I wanted to show my support for the All Blacks team in the Rugby World Cup.
My teacher chose me to receive the Special Terrific Person Award from our principal, Mr Swann at our school assembly. I felt proud.

Talent Quest

On Friday my family and I took part in a talent quest at our church. I was really nervous and shy to perform my dance because it was my first time dancing in front of an audience at my church. My older brother was the leader of our dance. We danced to the music of Last one Standing and Ava Maria. I learnt my dance at school and then I taught it to my family. Although we were placed second in the talent quest, I felt happy because the audience liked our dance and they shook our hands after the dance.

Baptism

On Saturday I had lots of work to do but I still went to my friend's baptism. I learnt that if we get baptised we are accepting Jesus as our savior. My friend, Paepae stood in the water and the minister held her hands while she went under the water. This is to clear the sins that are in our body.
Thereafter she changed into her pretty red dress. All the visitors had a yummy feed. She received gifts from her family and friends. I gave her $50.00.
I love going to church and I am going to be baptized in October.

Text Features

We did a scavenger hunt for our reading lesson. We had to find features of an information text and tick the box on our scavenger hunt page. Thereafter we had turns to use the camera. We had to take a photo of the text feature using the macro button. We then had to reflect as a class on how the feature helped us to find information and how it helped us to understand what we were reading.

Secret Meanings

Our class visited the Te Tuhi centre for the Arts in Pakuranga. We first looked at a tall sculpture outside the centre. This sculpture is made up of different colored cuisenaire rods like the ones we have in class. We had to compare the sizes of the rods.
Thereafter we were put into 5 groups and each group was given a different coloured paper. We had to think and write about food relating to that colour. We then had to choose a second colour and write words relating to nature. Jeremy, our art tutor told us a story using the words we had written and we had to connect the words to a colour.
The fun part was using paint to create our own colour wheel by mixing primary, secondary and tertiary colours. When we do painting the next time, we will remember to paint within the lines.

School Assembly

After lunch all the girls were excited because we were performing a dance at our school assembly. We dressed up and put on our lip gloss. My teacher told us that we looked pretty.
There were many items on the programme. Steven got the special terrific person award from Mr Swann. Our new police education officer, Constable Joanna Ryder helped Mr Swann to give out the certificates. Students who participated in the chess competition also received certificates. Two students from Otahuhu College told us that it is important to become good readers. They received a Duffy book from Mrs Dollie.
The best part of our school assembly was getting a trophy for being the best class.

The NED show

Do you know what NED stands for?
N is for NEVER GIVE UP
E is for ENCOURAGE OTHERS
D is for DO YOUR BEST.
Ralph did cool tricks with a yo-yo. He told us a story and NED was the character. He taught us to always make the right choices. He asked the children questions and gave out prizes. After the show we could buy a yo-yo. I want to be a champion like NED and will follow what NED says.

Souvenirs

My homework was to bring a souvenir from my country, Vietnam. I took a Chinese lantern to show my class. It is made of cardboard and paper. It has a Chinese symbol drawn on the lantern. You can place a tea light candle inside the lantern and you hang up the lantern. This year I went to the Lantern Festival in Auckland and I saw many colourful and beautiful lanterns.

I brought a Tongan souvenir to show my friends. It is a wall hanging with Tongan patterns. There is a map showing the places in Tonga, a fale which is a Tongan house and coconut trees.

Changing batteries

Our classroom clock wasn't working so Regan went to the office to get two batteries. Miss told me to get the clock down from the wall and to replace the batteries. She asked me if I knew what is the meaning of the + and - signs on the battery. I went to the computer and searched for the answer. A + means positive and a - means negative. When I put the new batteries into the clock, I saw the second hand ticking away. I was very happy because I learned something new.

How to keep cut apples fresh?

We are learning about changes in food. I investigated how to keep cut apples fresh by placing them in different solutions.
What I needed:
4 clear plastic cups
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1 apple cut into 4 pieces
What I did:
1. Cup 1 - Fill with 3/4 water and place a piece of apple.
2. Cup 2 - Fill with 3/4 water, a piece of apple and 1 teaspoon of salt.
3. Cup 3 - Fill with 3/4 water, a piece of apple and 1 teaspoon of sugar.
4. Cup 4 - Place a piece of apple.
What I observed after 3 hours:
The apple in cup 1 was brown.
The apple in cup 2 was only a light brown compared to all the other apples.
The apple in cup 3 with the sugar solution was browner than the apple in cup 2 .
The apple in cup 4 with no solution was the brownest from all the other cut apples. This is called oxidation and is caused by the enzymes in the apple and oxygen.
The best solution to keep apples fresh is salt.

On 5 July our class went to the Supervalue supermarket in Otahuhu to learn how food is stored and kept fresh. We were put into 5 groups with an adult. We had to complete a worksheet and write down what foods are stored in the freezer, cooler and on the shelves to keep them fresh. When we got back to class we shared our answers.Learning about changes in food in science is fun.

Book Review - I will not ever never eat a tomato

I read a book called I will not ever never eat a tomato written by Lauren Child. Lola was a very fussy eater and she didn't like carrots, peas and tomato. Lola's brother, Charlie tricked Lola and made her to eat her vegetables. If you want to know more about Lola and Charlie you can borrow this book from the library.

Baking scones

Yesterday a group of children went to Mrs Green for our technology lesson. This is my reflection on my learning how to bake scones. I made connections with the word dough when I made playdough in class and roti at home. The new word that I learnt was knead. Baking scones was a bit hard for us because we had to do it all by
ourselves. I found the recipe interesting because in class we are learning about fractions and I had to read 1/4 and 1/3. The next time I make scones I will add cheese to the recipe.

Team Assembly

I was nervous because I was going to stand in front of an audience and be the announcer for Team 6's assembly. Luckily I had Timote to stand beside me and be my partner. I talked about my visit to Crystal Mountain. Room 24 retold the story of Papa and Rangi using the pictures they drew. The children in room 25 said their speeches about whales and watching television. Room 6 shared book reviews. The teachers gave out awards to the children for working hard and for good behaviour.

Today we visited the Otahuhu Public Library. When we got there a librarian took us inside and showed us the layout of the library. We can choose fiction and non-fiction books. We can also borrow magazines, CD's, DVD's and puzzles. There are also computers in the library. To borrow books we need to become a member of the library and we will then get a card to keep. We are allowed to borrow up to 35 books. The librarian also showed us how to scan the books we are borrowing. We are going to visit the library with our families because we love reading.

What do you think of the patterns on my bag?

Mmmmm... bread

When we got to class this morning, we could get the lovely smell of bread baking. Yesterday we read the story of the Little Red Hen and we had to visualise the setting, characters and plot. One of the things we visualised was bread baking in the oven. My teacher then told us that she will bake us a loaf of bread using the bread machine. When the bread was ready, she sliced the bread into pieces and served it with butter. Thank you to our teacher. I hope we can get to eat freshly baked bread again.

Best class at assembly

Our school assembly was on Friday. The classes in Team 1 presented their items. The secret teacher was watching the classes during the assembly to see who was listening and being good. When it was time to choose the best class at assembly we all sat up and waited for Whaea Jan to announce the room number. When she announced that it was Room 24 we were very happy and proud of ourselves. Ria went to the front of the assembly to collect the trophy. We get to keep the trophy in our class for the next two weeks.

Carlos and Chris from King's College come to Room 24 every Mondays. They read to us. We listened to them reading about Myths and Legends. We asked them many questions about Maui and we also answered questions about the story.

Photo day

Some of us forgot that we were taking our class photos on Monday and we felt sad when we came to class and saw many of our friends dressed in their best clothes. Our teacher told us that we just needed our big smiles and we would all look beautiful. She was right. After our class photo was taken in the hall by a professional photographer, our teacher took a photo of us.

Back to school

We came back to school today after our Easter break. We missed Charlie being in our class because he has gone to a school in Melbourne. We will remember Charlie as a good friend who always helped us in our classwork especially with our computer work. We wish Charlie all the best in his new school.

Easter egg hunt

I went to my auntie's house in the holidays. My auntie had an Easter egg hunt for the children. She placed eggs all over the house and we had to go and find them. She told us that the child who finds the most will win the chocolate Easter bunny. I found 30 eggs and I got the chocolate bunny. I shared my other eggs with my cousins. It was fun looking for the eggs.

We can choose to be in the Maori, European, Indian, Cook Island, Samoan, Tongan or Asian group. The Maori group started the evening's performance with a haka. All the dancers looked lovely in their colourful and beautiful costumes. Some children received monies from their families during the show. The audience enjoyed watching the performance. They cheered for their children.

Dr Rabbit

Dr Rabbit was our special guest at our school assembly on Friday. He reminded us to take care of our teeth. Dr Rabbit asked the children questions and he gave out cool prizes to children who answered them correctly. Remember that having too much sugary foods and drinks are not good for our teeth.

School Assembly

Team 6 hosted the school assembly today. After singing the national anthem it was Room 24's item. When Rosemariah and Douglas announced our item, we went on stage. My friends and I were excited because we were practising very hard for our dance performance called Kung Fu Fighting. We had to get into four lines. I felt a little nervous. When our dance was finished everyone clapped and our teacher was proud of us.

A wet lunchtime

Lunchtime had just begun and I heard the three bells ringing. The children had to stop playing and go back into their classrooms. Some of us went to the Asian dance practice. Catherine read a big book called Simon Says to the children. It was about wild animals. We asked her questions about the book. The boys played board games. The children remembered to follow the rules on a rainy day. I missed playing outside.

Sending an email

We learnt how to send an email to Mrs Williamson. We can send a letter called an email. Email is short for electronic mail. Emails are sent from computer to computer along the telephone lines.
DID YOU KNOW? Emails can move from one place to another in a few seconds.
